Biography:

Duken Masimhanuly was born on April 20, 1963 in Akshi locality of Tekesi district, Xinjiang county, People’s Republic of China.

In 1982, after graduating from high school with honors, in the same year, Duken Masimhanuly entered the University of Central Nations in Beijing. In 1987 he graduated “with honors” from this educational institution, specializing in “philologist-translator”. After completing his studies at the university, he was assigned to the Institute of Literature at the Academy of Humanities of XUAR (Urumqi), where he worked as a researcher in 1987-1993.

In 1993, having arrived in the Republic of Kazakhstan by special invitation of the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi, he worked under the contract in the historical homeland, upon its completion, finally stayed in Kazakhstan, and engaged in teaching work at the Department of the Far Eastern Countries of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of KazNU. In 1999-2002 he was the head of this department.

In 2002 he was invited to teach at the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilev. L.N. Gumilev Eurasian National University (Nur-Sultan).

In 2003-2009. – Head of the Department of Oriental Studies of the Faculty of International Relations of L.N. Gumilev Eurasian National University.

In 2010-2019. – Professor, Head of the Department of Chinese Philology of the Faculty of Philology of the mentioned institution.

In 2019-2020. – Director of the Research Institute of Chinese Studies at ENU.

Since June 2020 – Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after R.B. Suleimenov. R.B. Suleimenov Committee of Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Under the guidance of academician R. Nurgali, he successfully defended his PhD thesis on “National liberation theme in the poetry of Kazakhs in China (20-50 years of the twentieth century)” in 1999 and his doctoral thesis “National traditions and innovation in Kazakh and Chinese literatures (based on the works of M. Auezov and Lu Shun)” in 2008.

Duken Masimkhanuly began his creative path while still within the walls of the university and to this day more than 30 books have been published.

Prizes and awards:

Best Work in Minority Literature Research Award (China) for Study on Oguznama (1990), All China Youth Award for Outstanding Work in Scientific Research and Literary Creativity (1991), Writers’ Union Award PRC “Original Talent” (1992) for achievements in the field of literary creativity and translation; by Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he was awarded the medals “10 Years of Independence of Kazakhstan” (2001), “20 Years of Independence of Kazakhstan” (2011), “25 Years Independence of Kazakhstan” (2016), “20th anniversary of Astana” (2018). In 2010, D. Masimkhanuly was awarded the title of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Best University Teacher”, in 2012 the International Literary Prize of the Union of Writers of Kazakhstan “Alash” and the SCO Award (Shainhai Cooperation Organization) “Silk Road: Humanitarian Cooperation” (gold medal). In 2013, for his significant contribution to the field of scientific research and training of young specialists, he was awarded the medal of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan – “Y. Altynsarin.” In December of the same year, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, D. Masimkhanuly was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Kazakhstan.” He is also a prize-winner of several national and international poetry competitions. Diploma winner of the “Festival of Poets” of Turkic-speaking poets in Elazig (Türkiye).

Having returned to his historical homeland in the first year of Independence, Duken Masimkhanuly has been tirelessly serving the science and education of our country for 28 years, training hundreds of Sinologists and Chinese language specialists, making his contribution to the formation and development of Sinology in Kazakhstan. His students work fruitfully in the Administration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Embassies and Consulates of Kazakhstan in the PRC, Kazakh-Chinese joint ventures, higher educational institutions and research institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Showing concern for the nation and being a public figure, Duken Masimkhanuly takes an active part in the socio-political life of our Country. In 2003-2019, he performed public work as a member of the National Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Republican Public Commission on Issues of Compatriots and Migration at the Compatriots Fund.
